BILLFISH
We had plenty of activity this week in Cabo, though
it’s a shame it is predominantly on small game, rather
than on billfish. Nevertheless we did have some nice catches
and ended up thirty six percent of charters hooking into a
combination of striped marlin, sailfish and blue marlin. Biggest
fish for us this week was a very decent 450 lb blue marlin
caught aboard “Ni Modo”, just two and half miles
in front of Cabo Pacifica, by John Szymansky form West Creek,
N.J, taking a little over an hour to boat. This same day,
28 ft “Andrea” had a blue marlin, close to 250
lbs, as well as a dorado and a Yellowfin, these caught twelve
miles off of the Old Lighthouse, for Jonathan Boggs from North
Carolina. Not to be outdone “Valerie” released
three striped marlin and boated a dorado twenty-seven miles
off of Land’s End for Jay Buke, Tom Luenda and Kevin
Andrews from Buford GA, Belleville IL and Greenboro GA, respectively.
All of the fish mentioned here were caught on October 7th.
On October 11th, “Tracy Ann” released a 250 lb
blue at the Herradura – this same day out new boat “No
Big Deal” also released another blue, slightly larger
fro Joe Ross. The majority of boats fished on the Pacific
from Land’s End to Golden Gate, though fish were also
caught in the opposite direction at the 95 spot and Punta
Gorda. The bait situation was difficult this week, as on many
days it was simply not available, despite the suppliers fishing
all night for them. This didn’t really affect the blue
marlin catches, as all of the blues caught this week were
on lures, though we believe there would have been more striped
marlin and sailfish caught if the boats had live bait. Pisces
anglers caught a total of forty-one billfish this week, consisting
of twenty-three striped marlin, eleven sailfish and seven
blue marlin, all but three fish were released.
OTHER SPECIES:
Dorado catches could hardly be better with a whopping
eighty nine percent of boats catching between one and fourteen
fish in a day, resulting in a total count of 380 dorado for
our fleet this week. Many of the smaller fish were released
and those anglers not keen on lugging heavy ice chests back
to the U.S also let them go. On October 9th, Richard Paciaroni
and friends had a lot of fun aboard “Cabolero”
a 31 ft Cabo Express, catching 13 dorado and releasing a striped
marlin at Pozo de Cota. Next day out “C Rod” fished
this same location and managed to catch fifteen dorado and
a striped marlin for Howard Brown and his group from Lewisville,
Texas. Yellowfin tuna catches were dramatically lower than
dorado with just eighteen percent of charters catching fish
in the 20 to 50 lb class, with catches ranging from one to
twelve fish. “C Rod” had 12 on October 12th for
Colleen Kincheloe form California twenty miles off the Old
Lighthouse. “Libre” went up to San Jaime and managed
to get slightly larger fish, up to 50 lbs and totaled ten
fish for Rick Guglielmo and family. We had a couple of wahoo
this week but smaller at 30 to 45 lbs. Inshore triggerfish,
skipjacks and rayadillos.
