BILLFISH
As predicted last week we did see an increase of
blue marlin as we entered the month of August. The biggest
fish this week was caught just three miles offshore, straight
out from Land’ End aboard “Ruthless”. The
fish weighed a very decent 400 lbs and took a green/blue/gray
lure taking Jeff Jones almost an hour to bring to the boat.
Another boat that did well on blues was “Cabolero”
a 31 ft Cabo - Greg Johnson from Nicholls, Georgia, fought
two fish in the 200 to 280 lb class, as well as four tuna,
ranging from 30 to 70 lbs, off of the Old Lighthouse on July
28th. “Valerie” also released a nice blue for
Michael Cotton from Broken Arrow, OK on August 2nd, this time
on the Cortez side off of the 95 spot. “Chinaco”
had an outstanding day on July 28th, with one blue marlin
released and eleven tuna boated in the 20-25 lb size. Although
I wouldn’t say billfish catches were fabulous they were
still the most abundant sportfish in Cabo, with forty six
percent of anglers catching mostly striped marlin. Our overall
catch success rate for all species combined was eighty nine
percent. As we expect at this time of year, fishing is a mixed
bag. Top striped marlin boat was “Ni Modo” with
four on the last day of July for Tom Gramlich from Yardley
Pennsylvania fishing with Jorge Cantu from Mexico. All of
these fish were caught on live bait 6 and half miles off of
Redhill. Live bait became a problem late in the week, as the
bait guys couldn’t catch any. We quickly went through
our stock of frozen ballyhoo, but a young entrepreneur showed
up on the dock to sell to those who couldn’t get the
live ones. Pisces anglers caught a total of 42 billfish this
week consisting of 36 stripes and 7 blues.
OTHER SPECIES:
Thirty four percent of charters caught yellowfin
tuna and finally we are starting to see some decent size fish
in the 50 to 70 lb category. Most of the catches were one
or two fish, with the more fortunate anglers getting up to
eleven in a day. Ron Nicholson was one of the lucky ones,
with eleven on “Chinaco”, five miles off of Finisterra.
“Cabolero” also had eleven tuna for Richard Prenger
off of San Jose. Pisces anglers caught a total of one hundred
and four yellowfin this report. Dorado catches were a little
lower at twenty seven percent, with catches of one or two
fish, some as big as 60 lbs. Inshore it was rather slow with
just a few skipjacks and roosterfish.
