BILLFISH
Well, finally we had great week fishing, despite
the fact that summer still hasn't shown up yet and we continue
to enjoy cool breezes coming from the Pacific. We had
some really outstanding marlin catches this week, with double,
triple and quadruple marlin days quite common; in fact to
get mentioned this week you had to have five billfish or more.
July 12th, was the best day this week, with "Rebecca" turning
out to be top boat for four striped marlin and two sailfish,
15 miles off of San Jose, for Gerard Claveau, Michael Chouinard
and Steve Volpe, from Salem, Mass. They were very pleased
with their catch, as they had been following the fish report,
weeks before they arrived in Cabo and were pleasantly surprised
by the turnaround. This same day, "Valerie" had five
striped marlin for our top lady anglers of the week, Chris
Nitzel and Deb Lyndnon from Colorado -their tally for the
three-day trip was seven marlin and eight yellowfin tuna.
Not to be left out, "La Brisa" also had five stripers
this day, in the same location, for Josh Lancaster and Steve
Stevens from Texas. The thirteenth was not unlucky, again
for "Valerie", who scored five striped marlin for Adam Kwasman
from Arizona fishing with buddy Allan Charles from Illinois.
The week started out at Jaime Bank on the Pacific, where a
mixture of some stripers, dorado and tuna were caught, but
by week's end the work was out that the Cortez side between
Chileno and Punta Gorda was the hot spot and that's when we
started seeing the numbers. Even boats that did not catch
marlin, threw bait to multiple fish. Sixty-four percent of
our charters caught marlin, with about sixty percent on live
bait and forty percent on lures, with orange/yellow and black/purple
worked best. Pisces anglers caught a total of 127 marlin
with 125 released, along with two sailfish.
OTHER SPECIES:
Fair on smaller game, with twenty-six percent of
charters catching dorado from 15 to 50 lbs, catches were spread
out and were seldom more than one fish, caught whilst trolling.
Yellowfin tuna catches were fair with eighteen percent of
boats landing fish from 15 to 35 lbs; although less boats
caught tuna, when they did find them they could catch quite
a few, from six to fourteen. We heard of a monster tuna
in Puerto Vallarta, the fish was caught by Omar Cardenas and
supposedly weighed 420 lbs, making possibly the all tackle
world record; however everybody is just so laid back over
there that nobody noticed. We heard about the fish on July
12th and it had been caught on the 11th and quickly filleted.
We are waiting for photos and will post them as soon as we
have them - it never ceases to amaze me that so many record
fish to unnoticed. Just a few wahoo around the 50 lb mark.
Inshore very slow for pangas.
