Mexico - Catch Reports

Cabo san lucas
March 18th to March 24th, 2005

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies most of the week, seas fair on the Cortez, turning a little rough on the Pacific when the wind picked up.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69F.

BILLFISH
Quite a decent week for marlin, with thirty seven percent of charters hooking up to striped marlin in the 120 to 180 lb class, plus one small blue marlin aboard “Ensueno”. Compared to last year for this time, this year is much better. “Ruthless” was on a roll this week, with three striped marlin caught and released on April 1st for George Kreiner from Kenmore, New York, fishing with buddies from Virginia; they also got a couple of giant squid around the 30 lb mark. This boat again did well on the 3rd, with one striper released, two wahoo and two dorado boated for Ron Werft from California. Boats are seeing quite a few marlin, but it was hard to get them to eat due to the large amounts of squid in the water, which they are feeding on. Several swordfish have been spotted and even hooked but as yet, we haven’t seen any make it back to the dock. Boats fished a variety of areas on both the Pacific and the Cortez; we heard reports that up towards the East Cape there was a good marlin bite going on. “La Brisa” had a nice mixed bag day for Glenn Evans from Phoenix, Arizona with a striped marlin released, one 60 lb wahoo, one 50 lb tuna and a 35 lb dorado. To close out the week, “Rebecca” scored a striped marlin release, plus two wahoo and a dorado for Charles Barrett. Pisces anglers caught a total of thirty-five striped marlin and one blue marlin all of which were released.

OTHER SPECIES:
Yellowfin tuna were the most widely caught species this week with a little over forty percent of boats finding fish in the 20 to 40 lb class, with catches from two to twenty fish per boat, with the average around five fish – the best location was from the Old Lighthouse to San Jaime. Dorado catches were slower at twenty two percent with fish from 20 to 40 lbs, usually no more than one or two per boat when found. It was nice to the wahoo catches that we had with quite a few boats having double headers on fish up to 70 lbs, still they could not be said to be plentiful. Large squid attacked lures giving boats catches of up to seven in the 30 to 50 lb class. Inshore sierra catches were good as were pargo and the odd amberjack. We also have one smallish Mako shark at 80 lbs aboard “Ni Modo”.
