BILLFISH
Well, this was definitely a billfish, or should
we say striped marlin week. We had outstanding catches on
marlin in the 120 to 180 lb class every day this report, even
on the day that we had rain. Anglers of the week were Bob
and Mary Lou Dietsch from Omaha, Nebraska, fishing with Dennis
& Ruth Riesselman from the same town and friends Chuck
& Romaine Wiebelhause from St. Bluffs, Idaho – who
managed to catch and release eight striped marlin in a single
day (February 7th) and also landed a dorado, aboard “Valerie”
. Five of their fish took lures, with the mackerel and squid
colors working and the other three too live bait. Other anglers
that did well were the “Marlin Men” – Keith
Meader, Warren Pescud, Max Jones & Ian Marsh, all the
way from Hong Kong – they were also on “Valerie”
and totaled seven marlin during their stay as well as a dorado.
Rich Perdue, out with his brother and friend aboard “Rebecca”
on the 8th, were pleased to release four stripers. Another
quadruple day was had by Brenda & Crecno DiMeglio, from
New Jersey, aboard “Andrea” on the 6th. Andy Wilkes
here with a corporate group, did well on striped marlin some
tuna and also got the only sailfish of the week. Fishing was
from Redhill to the Old Lighthouse with bait and lures both
working. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined
was ninety-one percent, with eighty percent of charters catching
marlin. Pisces anglers caught a total of 117 marlin and one
sailfish with all but one released.
OTHER SPECIES:
Not a great deal happening on smaller fish, in fact
only eight percent of boats caught dorado in the 15 to 30
lb class with the catch usually just a single fish. Inshore
pangas did better, with some catching up to 10 in a morning.
Just seven percent of boats caught tuna and size was average
at 15 to 25 lbs, the best catches were 27 miles off of the
old lighthouse were some boats got up to a dozen. George Gibson
from Colorado landed a nice 75 lb wahoo on the 5th just four
miles off of Chileno. Inshore there were lots of sierra, as
many as you wanted to catch as well as a few skipjacks.
