THE AREA
The Bijagos archipelago just off the Guinea Bissau coast has
long been known as a light tackle sport fishermans paradise.
This chain of small tropical islands and islets really are
a tropical parardise, clear blue sea and palm fringed beaches
are everything you would expect from the caribean, let alone
the West African coast just a 6 hr flight from UK. If you
have ever dreamt of fishing lures and flies in a perfect fish
filled habitat this is it, a lot of these areas have never
even been fished let alone over fished, and because of this
fact simple methods will pay dividends with countless hard
fighting Jacks, Snapper, Tarpon, Cobia, Queenfish, Spanish
mackeral and Captainfish all eager to take lures and hit flies.
Shallow saltwater lagoon, fast tide races and deep fertile
trenches offer a fantastic range of habitats for these predators
to thrive.
Tarpon well in excess of 100kg are resident and Bijagos Islands
now hold the World all tackle record for Tarpon a stunning
fish of 289lbs.
THE YACHT
The African Queen is a 47 mts, 17 cabin, classic 1950s motor
yacht, beautifully built from hardwood and steel she is a
perfect combination of style and comfort. All the cabins are
air conditioned, she has a majestic state room and dining
room with a classic 50s bar area. She tows 9 fishing boats
along with her and offers the ultimate in easy access fishing
and comfortable accomodation. The staff are all hotel trained
and will see to your every whim. She carries satelite telephone
and fax and all the latest navigation and safety features,
and just for extra reassurance she is powered by twin diesel
engines. The cruise begins every Friday from Oct to June,
and after the 2 hrs crossing to the Bijagos you will be cruising
in calm clear seas protected by the islands at all times.
THE
FISHING
Lures and flies are the name of the game here, with everything
from beach casting, trolling, wading in shallow lagoons to
livebaiting as well. Because the local inhabitants are almost
entirely farmers and geographically the arichpelago does not
lend itself to commercial fishing, these waters are all but
untouched. This should ensure an action packed week with the
boats trained guides putting you onto more than your fair
share of hard fighting fish. Standard Gear is provided although
I would recommend taking along light tackle or fly gear and
a few lures , because with a lot of Cudas around you will
wreck a few. I will send a recommended tackle list with the
booking confirmation. This really is a chance to fish a proper
unspoilt tropical paradise. Each day you set off 2 anglers
to a boat on a voyage of fishing discovery, trying areas and
even discovering new ones, if you like your fishing adventurous
this is definitely for you.
